Tim “The Tank” Thomas….NHL Goalie, Vezina Winner, Potential Olympian and Lunatic

JekyllHyde1931 - Thomas

There is an old saying, “If your goalie ain’t weird, he ain’t good”. I was reminded of how much this saying applies to Tim Thomas after reading some of his quotes from the Team USA Olympic orientation camp:

Thomas knows the many travails he went through to make it to the top of the NHL. Now with a chance to fulfill an Olympic dream that he began to shape as a Michigan high schooler, he spent some time the other day recalling how he was passed over years ago when it came time for Team USA to gather up its best and brightest for the World Junior Championships.

A graduating high school senior in the summer of ’93, the 18-year-old Thomas attended the US Olympic Sports Festival in San Antonio, still uncertain where he would go to college and excited at the chance of possibly being showcased in the World Juniors.

“There were eight goalies there, and my team won the gold medal,’’ said Thomas. “Me and the other goalie split all the games. And in four half-games, I let in one goal, total. And then, uh, I ended up not making the team, to make a long story short . . . and I broke every stick in the back of the room.’

As much as Tim Thomas is a stand up and humble guy, when he puts that equipment on he turns into a lunatic. And I love it. Here are a few examples just to prove the point:

Exhibit A. How about every time there is a game winning goal against him? He skates as fast as possible to the locker room where they have 75 sticks back there waiting for him to pulverize. Here he is trying to sprint off after Koivu scores on him in a shootout:

Top Saves of the 2008-2009 Season

In day two of our best of, lets look at some of the better saves this season. Although I don’t like this highlite as much because half of these saves would have been avoided if the goalies would have stayed in position. However, nothing beats a goalie more effectively than shooting low toe!

Boston Loses Game 7; 3-2 in OT

Not much to say about tonight. Boston took it on the chin with a 3-2 OT loss. Ironically Walker with the OT goal. I really don’t want to go over the game right now, nor do I care, I wish the B’s had played better. But from what I did see, Boston had 35 shots blocked or miss the net. Among the entire team, Boston had THIRTY FIVE SHOTS BLOCKED OR MISS THE NET. In a Game 7 that goes to OT, give me 5 shots that hit the net, and I’ll show you a game that ends in regulation. And for a team to get 36 shots on goal for the entire game, that’s terrible. Not to mention that Boston had 4 PP chances to Carolina’s 2. But, I’m not going to dwell on this, I need to go to bed and sleep it off.

Either way, rest assured a few things. For one, don’t tune away from, we’re going to continue covering the NHL playoffs. Although give us the weekend, I don’t think much will be posted. Second, I’m looking forward to another Bruins season in a few months. Third, lets go Blackhawks, I think they may do it.

Boston Bruins Force A Game 7

Game 7 Here We Come!

First off I want to apologize for those of you who visited this morning looking for the Game 6 recap. Last night I was too tired to create a recap and Commissionerdangle needed his beauty rest, and trust me, he needs all he can get. As for the rest of the day, here is my mini rant, some of you may get some enjoyment out of it. On Friday I’m leaving for New York City, New Jersey actually, for my girlfriend’s sister’s wedding. Because of that, I have about 2 weeks of work to do in 4 days. I literally have 47 projects that need to be completed before I take off Thursday night. Here’s where the comedy comes in, on top of that I need to make my own travel arrangements to Red Bank New Jersey. See, I’m not leaving with my girlfriend tonight to go to the wedding. I told her I’m missing her sister’s rehersal dinner in order to go to Game 7. If any of you saw fireworks in Boston last night, it wasn’t the Fourth of July. It was me deciding to watch the Bruins Game 7 at the Garden Thursday night, instead of head to the Garden State. Now I’m taking a 6:30am Mega Bus, Friday morning, to some corner in New York City, walking 6 blocks to Penn Station, taking a train to Red Bank, NJ, and somehow making it to the wedding by 4:30pm. Mind you, I don’t know where the wedding is at, the hotel, or the reception. If you think the Bruins have pressure tomorrow night, call me around 3pm Friday and see where I’m at.  Continue reading ‘Boston Bruins Force A Game 7’

Bruins keys for Game 3 success

After their sweep of Montreal and the drumming they gave Carolina in Game 1, I can relate to the B’s collapse in Game 2. Boston defenseman Aaron Ward said after game 2.

“If we thought we were going through here 16-0, we’re kidding ourselves, and it’s a big test for us now”

A big test is right, and I am very excited to see how the Bruins respond to the lacksadaisickle performance they put forth in Sunday’s 3-0 loss. The good news is that I don’t think it is going to take anything drastic for the Bruins to rebound.

Bruins Take Eastern Conference; Rangers booking April t-times

The Tank

Tank Thomas shut-out the New York Rangers to take the Eastern Conference and gaurantee home ice for the first 3 rounds of the playoffs. A couple quick notes:

  • commissionerdangle is officially blacked out at 6:32pm
  • clarkdub will be making a permanent t-time any minute now, along with owing most of the loge19 staff a round of drinks
  • The B’s could potentially be facing the Panthers first round
  • Krejci wins the 7th man award
  • Big Habs/Leafs game tonight for Montreal
  • Wheeler scored his 21st of the season tonight (also the game winning goal)
  • Avery proved why the rest of the league hates him
  • Anyone hear the final word on Ference?
  • commissionerdangle is now on his 14th beer of the night….uh oh!
  • Cleary’s tonight for a post-game celebration….if you can pinpoint commissionerdangle, he’ll buy you a drink.

Recchi-ng crew officially arrives in boston

The Bruins pulled out a much needed victory this afternoon at the Garden, in one of the best Original 6 matchups of the year. I’ve been looking forward to this game for a few reasons:

1. An Original 6 team that has a lot of history with Boston. Most people don’t believe in the rivalry anymore, but I think the Original 6 is something the NHL really needs to play up.

2. Seeing some more of the young talent in the league. Kane, Toews, Versteeg, Keith, Huet, and Burish are all tremendous players and a lot of fun to watch.
