lightning strikes five times

The Tampa Bay Lightning dominated play from start to finish scoring five unanswered goals defeating the New York Rangers 5-1. The Lightning scored two goals in the opening period and two more in the second. At that point, John Tortorella had seen enough of Henrik Lundqvist (four goals on 22 shots). Steven Valiquette came in and gave up one goal on eight shots. The game was very close to getting out of control at times. There were five roughing penalties, four fighting majors, and three misconducts.

happy thanksgiving

The New York Rangers defeated the Florida Panthers last night with a 2-1 shootout victory. This is the Rangers first winning streak (2 games) since their seven game winning streak to start the season. Marian Gaborik continued his scoring touch with the lone goal for the Blueshirts. Former Rangers Dominic Moore scored a late goal for Florida to tie the game at one. P.A. Parenteau scored the only shootout goal, giving the Rangers the victory. This was Parenteau’s second shootout winner this season. His first came against the Ottawa Senators in the seventh round on November 14.

7-1-0 equals #1

The New York Rangers continued their stellar play in 2009 with a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The victory is their seventh in a row and keeps them in a tie for first place in the NHL with 14 points (Pittsburgh is also 7-1-0). The Rangers had a well balanced attack against the struggling Leafs (0-6-1) with two goals coming from defenseman (Del Zotto (3) and Staal PP (1)) and two goals from forwards (Dubinsky (3) and Lisin (1). Henrik Lundqvist was excellent with 34 saves, he gave up the lone goal to Ian White.

Marian Gaborik stretched his point streak to 8 games with 2 assists tonight. Gaborik has 12 points in those 8 games and currently sits in 3rd in the NHL. Vinny Prospal also continued a scoring streak making it 7 games for him, Prospal assisted on Del Zotto’s power play goal.

The Rangers head back home for two games, Monday against the San Jose Sharks and Thursday against the New Jersey Devils.

This is the Rangers best start in a while and their longest win streak since the 2005-2006 season. Now I know it is still very early in the season, but I am not only happy with the Rangers play, but I am extremely impressed. I was a little uncertain with the new and young lineup this season, but the start they have put together has canceled any doubts. The Rangers struggled scoring goals last season, they are currently tied for the league lead with an average of 4.00 goals scored per game. The Rangers defense seemed to be a big issue at the start of the season, however they lead the NHL in scoring with nine goals.

Notes:

The video is from Battle of the Blades, a Canadian TV Show that features former NHLers figure skating. The show is kind of like Dancing with the Stars. Here is a list of a few of the former players:

Tie Domi

Bob Probert

Claude Lemieux

Ron Duguay

The game Monday against the Sharks (4-3-1) will be aired on Versus.

Enver Lisin scored his first goal as a New York Ranger.

The Rangers have the best home record in the NHL 4-0-0.

The Penguins have the best road record int he NHL 5-0-0.

That is it for me tonight, the Yankees are going to extra innings and I need to give a little more attention to that game…

Rangers lose season opener 3-2

The Pittsburgh Penguins raised their 2009 Stanley Cup banner and carried their play right into this season. The Penguins scored two goals in just over a minute en route to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers.  This was the Rangers first opening game loss since 2004. The Rangers fought hard all night and got to within a goal in the third period, but fell short in the end.

A few highlights for the Ranger:

Open Night Ceremony

The New York Rangers will kick off their 2009-2010 campaign with the Stanley Cup in the building. The Rangers will witness the Pittsburgh Penguins raise their Stanley Cup banner in the final opening night at Mellon Arena. Rangers coach, John Tortorella says the team will support the NHL and the Cup and watch the ceremony. Tortorella has been on the winning side of one of these ceremonies in the past with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I am sure the ceremony will be fun for the Penguins, but possibly even a distraction. For the Rangers, it should serve as motivation. The Rangers have not won a cup since 1994, which does not seem long when compared to my blogging counterparts who have not won a cup since 1972…

Here’s my preview/predictions of the 2009-2010 New York Rangers…

Evgeni Malkin (That’s Not My Name)

So has everyone heard that Ting Tings song, “That’s Not My Name“? It made it big because of the Victoria Secret Fashion Show over the winter. Anyway, someone did a remix to it for Evegen Malkin and I thought it was pretty funny. It starts off slow, but worth the time, especially if you’re looking to zone out for a few minutes at work. This is compliments of our friends over at Chics Hockey, check it out, they also have some Stanley Cup partying photos.

The Night Maxime Talbot Called My Friend A *****

Maxime Talbot

CommissionerDangle sent this story to me awhile ago but I forgot to post it, so here it is. It’s a long story the Commish found on hockeyfights.com but it’s worth the read. It’s basically the account of some Hurricane’s fan run in with the Penguins while they were in town for the Eastern Conference Finals this season. Below you can find the text of the story, here is the link to the original.

My Run-In With the Pittsburgh Penguins

Hey guys, I’m sure most of you Pittsburgh guys have seen some of your players around town but Sunday night here in Raleigh I saw a couple of them out and it proved to be a very interesting time. I thought some of the boys here would appreciate a tale like this but couldn’t find the proper place to post it so I figured here would be as good a place as any. I swear that every word of this story is 100% true. It is titled “Penguins Bar Story” or “The Night Maxime Talbot called my friend a p*ssy”. Anyways on with the show….

Coming out of Hibernation…sort of.

 Fleury save

So The Loge has been quiet as of late, but its just that time of year, so you’re going to have to deal with it.  The Penguins won the Stanley Cup, returning the favor to Detroit by celebrating their triumph at the Joe (Detroit beat Pitt in Game six at the igloo last year).  Malkin won the Conn Smyth, YEA, RAH RAH RAH (insert sarcasm), and I believe the weight of the Cup rested on the dirty french canadian (not dirty in a good way…dirty as in, well dirty), Marc-Andre Fleury’s shoulders; and he delivered.  With 1 second to go, Fleury made an unbelievable diving stop on Lidstrom which would have been a soldering-iron to the Penguins face (Not to mention he got a little help from his friend (crossbar) in the final minutes).  The talk of the Cup Finale however, was Mr. Sydney Crosby skipping out on a bit of the NHL-Traditional, series ending handshake.  One of our regulars here at Loge19 (ChickenParm), pointed it out after the game on the previous post’s comments section.  Personally, I can’t stand Crosby, and this is just another reason why.  I know it’s his first Stanley Cup, and its a dream come true to the young wizkid, but C’MON NOW!  This is one of the classiest traditions in sports, and SHOULD be the SECOND thing on EVERY players mind after celebrating with your teammates first.  You should know that the losing players do not want to stay on the ice and be a part of YOUR celebration.  It’s selfish, classless, and should be fineable by the good ‘ole Commissioner Bettman.  There is no place for that in the game, and I had the same reaction last year when Brodeur snubbed Avery during the ritual.   Those are suppossed to be the stars/faces of the league, and they go around pulling beer league stunts like that.  There should be no excuse for that, and you should read this ESPN article about it; has Draper’s reaction (he’s the man), more detail about what happened, as well as the Pittsburgh vice president Tom McMillan’s explanation…absolutely pathetic.  I hope Crosby drops the cup on his day with it, and camera are there to wacth it happen.

Moving on, there are a few things I wanted to post on here before they become old news.  Sean Avery is officially back in his element in the big city.  After partnering up to open his own bar, Warren 77, Avery was a field reporter at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival for FUSE TV (his pictures follow flava flavs on the last page of the album). Like he wasn’t partying as hard as the bare foot hippies dancing around throwing flowers everywhere…yeah right!  And if you want a little more Sean Avery in your life, here is a clip from Monday night’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, featuring Mr. Avery.  It’s good to have Sean Avery back in NY!

Bruins To Host Flyers or Capitals At Fenway

Fenway Puck

This just in from Boston.com, the Bruins will host either the Washington Capitals or the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 1. Furthermore, they are also confirming that the 2010 Winter Classic will be played in Boston this year, gauranteed. Look for an official announcement from the NHL sometime in July.

From Boston.com

Yes, there will be a sheet of ice in Fenway Park for a Jan. 1 Winter Classic. It’s a done deal, Bruins vs. either the Capitals or Flyers. The league will make it official at the start of July, with a splashy media event in the old ballpark. NHL free agency begins July 1, which grabs headlines around league cities (except for Phoenix, of course) for 2-3 days. The Sox play at home July 3-12. If the league wants the day for full media attention, it likely will wait for July 13-14 to make official all details, including how to purchase tickets.

Penguins Go Up 2-0/Blackhawks and Wings Game 2 Goal Scorer Guess

He Shoots, He Scores!!!

The Pittsburgh Penguins went up 2-0 on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight by winning in a 7-4 barnburner. Congrats to Loge 69 for winning the Guess the Scorer contest. He has won a Versus t-shirt and poster. Did anyone see Malkin’s third goal of the night? Ridiculous!!! As Ross, “The Answer”, put it, “it must have been hot in the Mellon arena tonight because Malkin was handing out snipesicles”.

Either way, this Stanley Cup Playoffs have been exactly what the NHL asked for. 4 of the leagues top stars, Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, and Kane have all scored hat tricks at some point. Ovechkin and Crosby in the same game!

So, for Game 3 of the Hawks/Wings game tomorrow, we’re going to do the same format. In the comments section give me the player you think will score the first goal of the game. As a tie breaker, also give the game time the goal will be scored. The winner will receive a Versus t-shirt and poster.
