lightning strikes five times

The Tampa Bay Lightning dominated play from start to finish scoring five unanswered goals defeating the New York Rangers 5-1. The Lightning scored two goals in the opening period and two more in the second. At that point, John Tortorella had seen enough of Henrik Lundqvist (four goals on 22 shots). Steven Valiquette came in and gave up one goal on eight shots. The game was very close to getting out of control at times. There were five roughing penalties, four fighting majors, and three misconducts.

Open Night Ceremony

The New York Rangers will kick off their 2009-2010 campaign with the Stanley Cup in the building. The Rangers will witness the Pittsburgh Penguins raise their Stanley Cup banner in the final opening night at Mellon Arena. Rangers coach, John Tortorella says the team will support the NHL and the Cup and watch the ceremony. Tortorella has been on the winning side of one of these ceremonies in the past with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I am sure the ceremony will be fun for the Penguins, but possibly even a distraction. For the Rangers, it should serve as motivation. The Rangers have not won a cup since 1994, which does not seem long when compared to my blogging counterparts who have not won a cup since 1972…

Here’s my preview/predictions of the 2009-2010 New York Rangers…

Light me up that cigarette, and I’ll strap…skates on my feet!

Congrats on setting a new world record...i guess.

Congrats on setting a new world record...i guess.

According to yesterday’s NY Post, Sean Avery was spotted down in the Meat Packing District in NYC over the weekend, huffing lung darts with gal pal actress Catherine Keener.  A good friend of mine who lives in NYC and runs a Hockey & Entainment blog called, The Daily Sauce,  saw Avery back on April 4th  after the Rangers disappointing 1-0 road loss to the Bruins, standing outside a New York City bar with his shirt and tie still on, a bluetooth in his ear and cigarette in mouth.  Now, this article in the Post got me thinking about how we are starting to see a cigarette smoking trend on the Loge,  so I decided to dig a little deeper for all you loyal readers and see if this was a common theme among NHL players.  So kick back, light up a stogie, or two…or three, as I uncover the TRUTH.

Ovi Keeps The Laughs Coming

Ovechkin

I don’t have a ton of time so I’m going to throw this up there. Caught this article on NHL.com about Ovechkin playing some mind games with the Rangers this morning during their pre-game skate.

More from NHL.com on the story:

A-very Warm Welcome From the Big Apple

"Hey Fatso, I'm Baaaaacck"

"Hey Fatso, I'm Baaaaacck"

I’m sick of reading articles and blog posts about how Sean Avery is an idiot, how he has not changed, and how he will surely wear out his welcome in New York, “like he has everywhere else.”  Listen, we all know Avery can be a punk and he does some stupid stuff at times, but lets not get carried away here; after all, he is slowly becoming a new face of the NHL.
