Shanahan’s In For One More Year

Brendan Shanahan

NHL.com is reporting that the New Jersey Devils have re-signed 22-year veteran Brendan Shanahan, to a one year deal. The 40-year old Shanahan will spend his 23rd season with the team who drafted him way back in 1987. After spending seasons in St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit, and New York it’s probably safe to say “Shanni” is looking to make one more go at it this year, and call it a career. As a fixture in Detroit, where he won 3 cups, Shanahan has pretty much locked in his Hall of Fame ballot, and will most likely retire with the Devils, after this season.  It’s good to see Shanahan back for another season, and New Jersey can use his veteran leadership. They’ll need it after losing forwards Brian Gionta (Montreal) and John Madden (Chicago) during free agency of this year. There is an expected official announcement coming later today.

So Long Per-Johan

PJ Axelsson

Boston.com is reporting that today marks the end of the road for long time Bruin PJ Axelsson. After playing all 797 of his NHL games wearing the spoked B, Axelsson will head back to his native country of Sweden to play for his former pro team, Frolunda, of the Swedish Elite League. Axelsson, who was a free agent starting July 1, was not offered an extension by the Bruins after his contract expired. This should not come to much of a surprise as there was speculation by all parties invovled that PJ would not be part of the 2010 team. This non-move by the Bruins to sign Axelsson comes in a long line of moves the B’s have made this off-season, that is changing the face of the team.

Kessel Resigns With Bruins; Aaron Ward Back To Carolina

OK, well this is not entirely true, but you can mark this post. Loge19.com is making the call that the Bruins will be resigning Phil Kessel for the 2010 season any day now. How can we make such a claim with unwaivering confidence? Look at the facts: Today the Boston Bruins traded defenseman Aaron Ward to Carolina for Boston College Alum Patrick Eaves and a 2010 fourth round draft pick. Here’s the catch, as soon as the transaction was completed, the Bruins immediately put Eaves on waivers in hopes of another team picking up the contract, or the Bruins buying him out.

Why does this matter? With the Ward trade and Eaves on waivers, this clears up about $2.5 million in cap space that the Bruins were to pay Ward this season. Additionally they may not have to put forward the $1.7 million to Eaves, if someone picks him up. Hopefully you’re starting to see the light here.
