Idiot of the Day Award Goes To: KEITH BALLARD! Also, Ovechkin’s season may be over…

So village idiot and league tough guy Keith Ballard decided to take his frustrations out on  his own teammate, goaltender Tomas Vokoun. In reality Ballard was angry about Kovlalchuck’s goal and tried to break his stick over the cross bar. However, Ballard didn’t look before swinging for the fences and instead hit Vokoun, who was trying to find his jock strap. Vokoun was taken to the hospital for a deep gash to his ear, but will make a full recovery.

The video is pretty funny when you see Ballard do his best Sammy Sosa impression, but what happened after? Where did he go? You don’t really see him again…

Here’s a quick look at it:

Ovi’s Online Romance

alex-ovechkin-mystery-girlfriend

If I was making roughly 9 million dollars a year playing in the National Hockey League, I really hope I wouldn’t have to use the internet to meet a nice lady friend. Apparently this isn’t the case though for Alexander Ovechkin who met, and briefly dated a girl back in 2008, on the world wide web.

The Kid and The Great

nhl_g_crosby_ovechkin_576

It’s what we’ve been waiting for, or at least what Garry Bettman has been dreaming of since 2005, and thanks to some 3rdperiod heroics by the Carolina Hurricanes and a total collapse by the New York Rangers , we finally have a showdown between Sid the Kid and Alex the Great. Obviously this is a marketing dream for the NHL, having the two most recognizable faces of the NHL since Gretzky and Lemieux, (who never saw each other in the post season) squaring off in a Stanley Cup Playoff series. This has been a rivalry in the making since their respective rookie seasons. And with all great rivalries comes the age old question: Who is the best?

The Loge has had its fair share of debates over which player is better. While they both play very different styles of hockey, on paper they look almost identical. Since their rookie seasons of 2005-2006 Ovechkin has put 420 points on the board with 219 goals and 201 assists, while Crosby has 132 goals, 265 assists for 397 points.  A mere 23 points separates the two, while the differences in goals and assists between them can be attributed to their styles of play. Ovechkin, the flashier of the two, will shoot from anywhere , while Crosby is more of a playmaker. In head to head match-ups  they have faced each other 15 times, Crosby has the edge with a record of 11-4-0 to Ovechkin’s 4-8-3.

While this debate has been going on since their first games in the NHL and will surely continue on long after the Stanley Cup is hoisted this year, there is more to this series than these two individuals.

Ovechkin’s Amazing Goal (Yes, Another)

I didn’t watch Game 5 of the Caps/Rangers game last night, but while I was at the Volvo Ocean Race today I heard Ovechkin had another ridiculous goal. This has to make, like, 15 highlight reel goals for the year. Right? The Capitals won 4-0 to tighten the Ranger’s series lead to 3-2. It’s going to be an amazing Game 6 on Sunday.

Some amazing games coming up tonight. The Penguins can finish of Philadelphia, Anaheim can send San Jose to the golf course, and the Blackhawks better take Calgary to the brink of elimination.

Habs Out Top 2 Defensemen

alex

Montreal Canadiens’ top 2 defensemen are out of the lineup for at least three weeks.  As Boston Bruins fans, if the playoffs were to start today we’d be facing the New York Rangers.  Seeing how our playoff tickets are now in hand, I personally would like to see a Habs/Bruins first round matchup.  With the Habs’ top 2 defensemen out of the lineup this would be a perfect opportunity for the Bruins to get some revenge on last year’s first round playoff.

Note:  Ovechkin was clearly rocking the “Scotty Hartnell Wig” earlier in the night…………how else would he have wheeled these two gems?

Links for the day from around the NHL

-Anyone have any suggestions for Matt Kalman to pass along to the Bruins to replace last year’s playoff hunt team-appointed ‘player of the game Bruins Hard Hat’?

-Great story on an alternate pronunciation of Scott Hartnell’s name – pictured above (Empty Netters)

-Bruins became the first team in the Eastern Conference to clinch a playoff spot with their big win over NJ on Sunday

-San Jose took back the lead for the Presidents Trophy with a win over Avs on Sunday. JR gives Alexei Semenov a pie in the face for his efforts as #1 star (via HLOG):

-Malkin’s head shot (below) on Wayne Simmonds drew a fine but no suspension from the NHL. Losts of conspiracy theories on why no suspension was handed down

My thoughts exactly….

canadasucks

(just kidding about the picture. I like Canada (kind of), but I think it is very applicable)

Well this could easily be an extension/update X4 of Ovechkin Gives Cherry The Finger but I think that it deserves its own post because:

  1. Bob Miller, LA Kings play-by-play announcer, tells it exactly how it is.
  2. The Bruins are included in the clip.

Here he Bob Miller on Ovechkin’s celebration:
