Rangers lose season opener 3-2

The Pittsburgh Penguins raised their 2009 Stanley Cup banner and carried their play right into this season. The Penguins scored two goals in just over a minute en route to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers.  This was the Rangers first opening game loss since 2004. The Rangers fought hard all night and got to within a goal in the third period, but fell short in the end.

A few highlights for the Ranger:

Marian Gaborik was certainly entertaining to watch and at times he was the best player for both teams. He showed explosive speed, a quick release, and even scored his first goal as a New York Ranger. After seeing him live, I believe he can score over 40 goals this season, that is if he can remain healthy.

Del Zotto is the real deal zotto. He spent over 17 minutes on the ice, which included nearly five minutes on the power play. Not only has he earned a spot on the Rangers, but he as the skill to make a difference on the back end for the Blue Shirts.

The Rangers power play looked much better, but the result was the same as the Rangers went 0-4 with the man advantage.

Side notes:

Sidney Crosby was up to his normal self. He scored a goal, sported some flashy moves, and even lost his temper as usual. But, his groin did not seem to effect his play.

Sean Avery did not play due to a sprained knee.

Alex Semenov turned down the Rangers contract offer. According to MSG, Semenov’s wife wanted more money. During the second period of the broadcast an awkward scene showed Semenov and Sather talking, but making no effort to look at each other…

According to bodog.com the Rangers odds of winning the cup this season are 25-1 and the Bruins odds are 9-1.

The video I posted is from nyrangerfanatic1. This kid is better than Mike Keenan…

The Rangers will play their home opener tomorrow against the Ottawa Senators, puck drops at 7:30 PM. I will be at the game so no posts from me, unless I can figure out how on my Blackberry…
