Tim “The Tank” Thomas….NHL Goalie, Vezina Winner, Potential Olympian and Lunatic

JekyllHyde1931 - Thomas

There is an old saying, “If your goalie ain’t weird, he ain’t good”. I was reminded of how much this saying applies to Tim Thomas after reading some of his quotes from the Team USA Olympic orientation camp:

Thomas knows the many travails he went through to make it to the top of the NHL. Now with a chance to fulfill an Olympic dream that he began to shape as a Michigan high schooler, he spent some time the other day recalling how he was passed over years ago when it came time for Team USA to gather up its best and brightest for the World Junior Championships.

A graduating high school senior in the summer of ’93, the 18-year-old Thomas attended the US Olympic Sports Festival in San Antonio, still uncertain where he would go to college and excited at the chance of possibly being showcased in the World Juniors.

“There were eight goalies there, and my team won the gold medal,’’ said Thomas. “Me and the other goalie split all the games. And in four half-games, I let in one goal, total. And then, uh, I ended up not making the team, to make a long story short . . . and I broke every stick in the back of the room.’

As much as Tim Thomas is a stand up and humble guy, when he puts that equipment on he turns into a lunatic. And I love it. Here are a few examples just to prove the point:

Exhibit A. How about every time there is a game winning goal against him? He skates as fast as possible to the locker room where they have 75 sticks back there waiting for him to pulverize. Here he is trying to sprint off after Koivu scores on him in a shootout:

pics from the tryout

OK so here are some pics from the first session of the day. They went through some drills then a bag skate at the end. Mostly pics of Kesler, Rafalski, Booth, and Whitney might be in there somewhere. Our twitter page has some more pics. Interesting note, Chelios was skating out there with no equipment. Also whenever Taxi Kane would skate by the bleachers, people erupted in applause. I’m out of here now, there are about twice the amount of people filing in for the second session.

Mens USA Hockey Tryouts

Heading out to the USA Mens Olympic Hockey tryouts in Woodridge, Illinois. Do you think it’s any coincidence that USA hockey is hosting the tryouts at the kiiiid’s home rink? I don’t think so, it’s a talent hotbed. I flew from Detroit to Chicago with a lot of these guys last night. They sat in first class, I sat in no class next to some guy who I’m pretty sure had H1N1 and another guy who was a protein shake away from throwing and catching planes at O’hare. All that and I know for a fact my seat was slanted to the left, even though the stewardess claims otherwise. More to come with pics when I figure how to upload them from my bberry.

BC/BU and UNH/Northeastern To Pair Off In Their Own Winter Classic?

It has already been determined that the Boston Bruins will be hosting the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 Winter Classic, at America’s second most beloved ballpark. There was also word that Boston College would play Boston University in an encore game the following day. Now Boston.com is reporting that on August 20th the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Sports Group, and Hockey East will be hosting a press conference at Fenway. The article goes on to say a press release states that also in attendance will be head ice hockey coaches and student-athletes from BU, BC, Northeastern, and UNH.

So based on what happened last time there was a press conference at Fenway with hockey teams involved, we can assume what the outcome will be. Furthermore, an inside source has told us that the BU/BC game is definitely on while the NU/UNH game is being hashed out. Pretty awesome if you ask me! To have UNH play Northeastern in the afternoon and then BU play BC in the evening would be amazing! More to come on this story.

Jordan Caron Railroaded by Colten Teubert

CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! DING DING DING DING DING DING DING CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Wow, that was a big hit, and for those of you wondering the name of the freight train is Colten Teubert, a 6′ 4” 200 pound defenseman property of the Los Angeles Kings. The victim, Boston Bruins first round pick Jordan Caron. Caron suffered a broken collar bone from this hit and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, including the Bruins rookie camp in Kitchener Ontario. The one thing that kind of gets me is the way Teubert handles the interview after, as though it wasn’t that big of a deal and he’ll pat Caron on the back and apologize. I guess that’s what makes hockey so sweet, keep your head up and you won’t be taking inventory of your teeth.

Patrick Kane Arrested For Chris Browning Buffalo Cab Driver

Patrick Kane

I absolutely HATE stories like this. If you don’t already know, Chicago Blackhawks star forward, Patrick Kane, was arrested early Sunday morning for punching a cab driver in his hometown of Buffalo, NY. Apparently there was a dispute over some additional money owed to Patrick, and his cousin, James. As the story goes the Kanes gave the cab driver $15 for a $13.80 fare. The cab driver could only come up with the $1.00 in change, but could not produce the additional $.20. This sent the Kanes into an outrage and sparked them to attack the cab driver. While it is still unclear who punched the cabbie, Patrick was certainly involved. You can take in all of the details here, but I have a much larger issue.

Shanahan’s In For One More Year

Brendan Shanahan

NHL.com is reporting that the New Jersey Devils have re-signed 22-year veteran Brendan Shanahan, to a one year deal. The 40-year old Shanahan will spend his 23rd season with the team who drafted him way back in 1987. After spending seasons in St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit, and New York it’s probably safe to say “Shanni” is looking to make one more go at it this year, and call it a career. As a fixture in Detroit, where he won 3 cups, Shanahan has pretty much locked in his Hall of Fame ballot, and will most likely retire with the Devils, after this season.  It’s good to see Shanahan back for another season, and New Jersey can use his veteran leadership. They’ll need it after losing forwards Brian Gionta (Montreal) and John Madden (Chicago) during free agency of this year. There is an expected official announcement coming later today.
