Executive of the Year Award for Chiarelli

chiarelli_peter

Although the Bruins will not be touching that elusive hardware this year, they are still raking in the awards. After yesterday’s announcement from The Sporting News that Claude Julien was named the NHL coach of the year, today Peter Chiarelli was named the NHL Executive of the Year. From SN:

Quennevilles cursed: good news for the wings

joel_quenneville1

Here is a little trivia for all you Loger’s this morning, and this doesn’t have anything to do with the Kiiid’s t-shirt giveaway, but I find this very interesting regardless. How many times have the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley cup after beating a Joel Quenneville team in the playoffs?

Coach of the Year Award for Claude

coach julien

Claude Julien was named the NHL coach of the year by The Sporting News. This award from The Sporting News is particularly important because it is voted on by coaches and executives throughout the league and not biased sports writers . From SN:

Adam Burish Down To 7 Lives

I’m sure most of you have seen this, but those that have not, Adam Burish must have some feline traits in  him. Clearly he has used up 2 of his 9 lives, that we know about. His first, was the car accident he was in as a teenager, and now almost getting his neck sliced open by teammate Ben Eager. When you watch the video, Burish does not have much of a reaction when Eager’s skate cuts him. He knew the blade had made contact, but he checked for blood and kept going. Of course, this was eerily reminiscent to the Richard Zednik incident last year. And who could forget about Buffalo’s Malarchuck getting his throat severly cut. (Warning, this video is graphic) Luckily for Adam he was just grazed and will be OK to play in tonight’s Game 2.

Adam Burish

Immediately after the game NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman caught up with Adam Burish to get his thoughts. Burish had some interesting things to say about the incident with Eager’s skate, and his presence in the lockerroom. Nothing says NHL playoffs like considering a punch in the face as something positive.

From NHL.com

Sunday, 05.17.2009 / 7:50 PM / Conference Finals: Detroit vs. Chicago
By Adam Kimelman  – NHL.com Staff Writer
DETROIT — Adam Burish knew immediately there was a problem.”I saw his skate come right up my throat, and right away I grabbed my neck and said there’s something coming out here,” Burish said. “There were a couple drips, so I was pretty darn lucky.”
It was the second period, and Burish and linemate
Ben Eager were forechecking in the Detroit zone when Eager and a Detroit player got tied up. Eager lost his balance and his skate flew up and clipped Burish in the throat.

It was a play reminiscent to the scary Richard Zednik incident last season, when Olli Jokinen’s skate blade sliced Zednik’s jugular vein.

But Burish was more fortunate; he skated away from Eager’s out-of-control skate knowing he was a lucky man.

Staal Brothers Point Competition/Blackhawks and Redwings Pick To Score

Versus ShirtVersus Poster
Above is what the poster and shirt look like. If you cannot tell, the poster is Boston’s Blake Wheeler scoring on Chicago’s Nikolai Khabibulin. I think this was taken during the Bruin’s shootout win during the regular season this year. Either way, above Bulin it says “Sudden Death”, above Wheeler it says “Sudden Life”, and then underneath it says “378000 Seconds. Don’t Miss A Single One”. The shirt is super soft, has goalie mask with wings on the front, the Versus logo, and “2009” behind the logo.

So, for the Staal Brothers Point Competition, here is what we have for submissions:

Sugar Sean

Eric-4 Jordan-2

Cammi Granato

Eric-6 Jordan-3

LPSnipa

Eric-4 Jordan-4

Freshness

Eric-6 Jordan-3

Loge69

Eric-6 Jordan-4

PatVerbeek

Eric-5 Jordan-3

Here is the competition for tomorrow, and I want a lot more submissions, other than the normies. You really have nothing to lose, and if anything you have a new shirt to workout or lounge in, so lets get some more action. Literally everyone and anyone can submit their vote.

For Game 2 of the Chicago Blackhawks/Detroit Redwings series, give me the player you think is going to score the first goal of the game. Also give me the minute and period you think the goal will be scored, I’ll use that as the tie-breaker. If people choose the same player, the person with the time closest to the goal, their pick will win. Please have your submission in before tomorrow night’s puck drop. Please put your submissions in the comment section. Again, duplicate submissions will be omitted along with the original. The winner will receive a shirt and poster.

Not an excuse but…

Boston Globe beat-writers are reporting that a number of Bruins were pretty banged up for much of their Stanley Cup Playoff run. Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has reported that Phil Kessel and David Krejci will both undergo surgery this offseason. Kessel will have shoulder surgery on Thursday to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum and Krejci will have hip surgery sometime next month. Both are expected to miss the start training camp this summer. There are also a number of other injuries that are now being reported by the team.

“There’s a variety of injuries we had throughout the course of the playoffs,” said Chiarelli this afternoon. “Every team has injuries. But we seemed to have a few more than other teams. I have to hand it to the players for playing through those injuries.”
