All NHL Team Award for Chara/Thomas plus Goalie of the Year Award for Thomas

The Sporting New’s love affair with the Boston Bruins continues. Yesterday SN awarded Tim Thomas the Goalie of the Year Award and also named him and Zdeno Chara to the All NHL Team. Their award are based on votes from over 300 NHL players, coaches and executives. Thomas and Chara’s accolades come a few days after Claude Julien was awarded Coach of the Year and Peter Chiarelli was awarded Executive of the Year by The Sporting News. Hopefully the Bruins will be able to pick up some more hardware at the NHL Awards Show in June in Las Vegas.

More from The Sporting News on the All NHL team and Goalie of the Year Award:

All-NHL Team
Alex Ovechkin, F, Capitals
Topped 50 goals for the third time in the past four seasons.
Evgeni Malkin, F, Penguins
Led the NHL with 113 points, the highest total of his skyrocketing career.
Zach Parise, F, Devils
Gets better every year; 45 goals put him among the league’s elite scorers.
Zdeno Chara, D, Bruins
Led Boston’s resurgence with a physical presence and NHL’s hardest shot.
Mike Green, D, Capitals
The seventh defenseman in league history to score 30 goals in a season.
Tim Thomas, G, Bruins
Led the league in save percentage (.933) and goals-against average (2.10).

Washington forward Alex Ovechkin, Sporting News‘ NHL player of the year, was named on 36 of 39 ballots by league coaches and executives and heads SN’s 2009 All-NHL team. The other top forwards are Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, the second-leading vote-getter with 31, and New Jersey forward Zach Parise, who garnered 20 votes. Washington’s Mike Green was the leading vote-getter among defensemen with 30 and Boston’s Zdeno Chara was second with 17. The goaltender selection is Tim Thomas, SN’s goalie of the year.

And on Thomas’ Goalie of the Year Award:

Tim Thomas, who posted league highs in goals-against average (2.10) and save percentage (.933) while helping the Boston Bruins climb to the top of the Eastern Conference, has been named Sporting News‘ Goalie of the Year, outdistancing rookie Steve Mason by nine votes in a poll of 292 NHL players.

“He’s a fierce competitor,” Washington forward David Steckel told Sporting News. “His human nature translates on the ice. … He’s not going to take anything from anyone.”

Thomas, 35, is a model of perseverance, a fierce competitor who battled for eight long seasons overseas and in the minors before finding his way to Boston and eventually earning the starting job. His style is unorthodox, his playing style combative — a perfect fit for the in-your-face Bruins.
