Reporters from both the Boston Globe and TSN are reporting that Boston Bruins forward Phil Kessel is now in recovery from a successful left shoulder surgery that repaired a torn rotator cuff. Although the surgery was successful, Kessel is expected to be in rehab for six months which will put him out for the start of next season. He becomes a restricted free agent July 1, and at this point it is unclear whether or not he will be back in Boston for the 2009 / 2010 season.

There are plenty of unsuccessful surgeries. People die on the table every day and I’m pretty sure that would be considered unsuccessful. Some people have reactions to the anesthesia that causes the surgery to not even be performed or worse the person dies. Maybe they cut the kid open and there’s too much swelling and they have to close up the incision and try another time. Maybe an injury is so bad they can’t repair it when they see it up close. And if you’re only talking about professional athletes, given they have the best surgeons in the world working on them, the failure rate is extremely low but it still exists. Shit happens.

I was making a joke of the fact that every time an athlete undergoes surgery there is a press release announcing that it was successful. IN THE SPORTS WORLD you never hear a team announce that a player’s surgery was unsuccessful. It was a joke.
