Bruins To Host Flyers or Capitals At Fenway

Fenway Puck

This just in from Boston.com, the Bruins will host either the Washington Capitals or the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 1. Furthermore, they are also confirming that the 2010 Winter Classic will be played in Boston this year, gauranteed. Look for an official announcement from the NHL sometime in July.

From Boston.com

Yes, there will be a sheet of ice in Fenway Park for a Jan. 1 Winter Classic. It’s a done deal, Bruins vs. either the Capitals or Flyers. The league will make it official at the start of July, with a splashy media event in the old ballpark. NHL free agency begins July 1, which grabs headlines around league cities (except for Phoenix, of course) for 2-3 days. The Sox play at home July 3-12. If the league wants the day for full media attention, it likely will wait for July 13-14 to make official all details, including how to purchase tickets.

Havlat Dunked By Kronwall

I’m on the Vineyard right now, so I’m not going to do much Loging. However, I wanted to throw up this hit that Nicklas Kronwall put on Martin Havlat. Honestly, I thought Havlat was dead, and it’s kind of creepy to watch him lay on the ice. The NHL should have a good time sorting out this one. Was it legal? Did Kronwall deserve a 5-minute major? I don’t know, you decide. When he made contact, his feet were on the ice, on his follow through his feet left the ice. I will say it was a clean when it comes to the contact, Kronwall’s elbow was tucked in, and it was all shoulder. Either way, Chicago blew a 3-0 lead only to win in overtime.

Congrats to ChickenParm for winning the Guess the Scorer contest, with his pick of the pride of UVM, Sharp. Lets do this again for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Please put your pick of who will score the first goal, in the comments section, along with the period and time to settle a tie.

All NHL Team Award for Chara/Thomas plus Goalie of the Year Award for Thomas

chara thomas

The Sporting New’s love affair with the Boston Bruins continues. Yesterday SN awarded Tim Thomas the Goalie of the Year Award and also named him and Zdeno Chara to the All NHL Team. Their award are based on votes from over 300 NHL players, coaches and executives. Thomas and Chara’s accolades come a few days after Claude Julien was awarded Coach of the Year and Peter Chiarelli was awarded Executive of the Year by The Sporting News. Hopefully the Bruins will be able to pick up some more hardware at the NHL Awards Show in June in Las Vegas.

More from The Sporting News on the All NHL team and Goalie of the Year Award:

Penguins Go Up 2-0/Blackhawks and Wings Game 2 Goal Scorer Guess

He Shoots, He Scores!!!

The Pittsburgh Penguins went up 2-0 on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight by winning in a 7-4 barnburner. Congrats to Loge 69 for winning the Guess the Scorer contest. He has won a Versus t-shirt and poster. Did anyone see Malkin’s third goal of the night? Ridiculous!!! As Ross, “The Answer”, put it, “it must have been hot in the Mellon arena tonight because Malkin was handing out snipesicles”.

Either way, this Stanley Cup Playoffs have been exactly what the NHL asked for. 4 of the leagues top stars, Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, and Kane have all scored hat tricks at some point. Ovechkin and Crosby in the same game!

So, for Game 3 of the Hawks/Wings game tomorrow, we’re going to do the same format. In the comments section give me the player you think will score the first goal of the game. As a tie breaker, also give the game time the goal will be scored. The winner will receive a Versus t-shirt and poster.

Kessel’s sugery successful

kessel

Reporters from both the Boston Globe and TSN are reporting that Boston Bruins forward Phil Kessel is now in recovery from a successful left shoulder surgery that repaired a torn rotator cuff. Although the surgery was successful, Kessel is expected to be in rehab for six months which will put him out for the start of next season. He becomes a restricted free agent July 1, and at this point it is unclear whether or not he will be back in Boston for the 2009 / 2010 season.

Regardless, all of us at the Loge wish Phil a healthy and full recovery.

Pens/Canes Game 2 T-Shirt Guess The Scorer

Slow day in the Loge yesterday, and looks like it could be that way today. But, seeing Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals is tonight, I want to see if we can give away another t-shirt. Our winner from Monday night’s game was Zambooie for guessing the Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks was going to be the first scorer of the game. Congrats. As for the Staal points competition, neither Jordan nor Eric have any points, therefore LPSnipa is on top considering he guessed that they would tie. For tonight, lets use the same format as Monday night. In the comments section below guess which player will score tonight’s first goal. In order to break any ties, please also put at what point in the period the goal is scored. For example, Crosby at 2:14 of the first. Meaning that when the clock reads 17:46 Crosby scores. The person who guesses the closest to the actual time wins. Again, this is for everyone to participate, and please, no duplicate submissions. The winner will receive a Versus t-shirt and poster:

Versus PosterVersus Shirt

As for today, I have an interesting little piece I’ve been working on regarding the Blackhawks and their recent signing. I’ll publish that sometime this afternoon. Until then, you  have until the puck drops tonight to submit your guess.
