Ovechkin gives Cherry the finger (basically) – *UPDATED X3*

NHL All Star Skills Hockey
Since the Bruins stunk up the Garden tonight I dont even feel like doing a recap of the game. I would much rather discuss Alexander ‘where we go dance’ Ovechkin scoring his 50th goal of the season, the third time he has done that in the NHL. here is his celebration:

Not sure what he is doing there. Is he praying to the hockey gods? Who knows, he is Russian.

*UPDATE: Apparently he was pretending that his stick was on fire.

While that is not one of my favorite celebrations that he has performed after a goal, I will defend his right to dance around and jump on the boards to the death.

Some people don’t agree with me. Sidney Crosby and Don Cherry fall into that category. Here is a video from Coach’s Corner with Crosby and Cherry calling Ovechkin out for his excessive celebrations:

Hahaha… I love the comparison. Although I do think soccer players are ridiculous, I have more of a problem with them diving and pretending to be hurt rather than their excessive celebrations. Cherry is old school, which is OK. I like what he has to say about hockey most of the time and he did win the Jack Adams as the best coach in the NHL for the Bruins in 1976. But I dont think he is right here. Ovechkin is great for the game and he looks like he is genuinely having the time of his life out there. I also think Crosby is a little pissed because he got bitched around by Ovechkin the last time they played:

Ovechkin knows about Cherry’s comments and tonight he told Cherry exactly how he felt about him with his actions. Good for him. He did exactly what he wanted to do; have fun, score goals and probably danced to techno after the game.

**UPDATE X2: Here is the video of his post game interview. Pretty funny. He could careless about what Cherry says.

Not only can Ovechkin appreciate talent but he is also marketable. If only he could speak English….

Ohh well, check out these celebrations and tell me that he is not good for the game

*UPDATE X3: Looks like Capital Coach Bruce Boudreau has gone all Roger Goodell on Ovechkin. The Capitals beat writer spoke with Boudreau and Ovechkin after they had a sit down the morning:

“We had a little talk,” [Boudreau] said. “I won’t say what we talked about, but we talked.”

After a pause, Boudreau added: “It’s the first and only time I’ve seen that happen in all the time I’ve been watching Alex. I’ve never seen him do a celebration like that. But I don’t expect it to happen again.”

Ovechkin said he was not trying to disrespect anyone or the game. He was just being himself. But he also said he’s not going to change because people don’t like his goal celebrations.

“Bruce asked me what I mean to do this,” Ovechkin said. “I just have fun. He said people might think I don’t respect different team. But I respect everybody. I don’t want to show bad things. I show my thing. It was not disrespect.”

“Everybody right now don’t like my celebration when I score a goal and jump to the glass or do something like that,” he added. “But I only do something new. It’s just my thing. I was just happy that I scored 50 goal” [Capitals Insider via Illegal Curve]

Boooooooooo… Let the kid play.

Thank god I live in America and don’t have to listen to Don Cherry everytime I want to watch hockey. His suits are worse than Barry “the mullet” Melrose’s, and he can’t talk about hockey without saying how amazing canada is and how amazing all candian players are. Any time I see a video clip of him, it is guaranteed he will say something about “the canadian way…” blah, blah, blah.
